This year's fall foliage season has been an unusual one for West Virginia. Dry conditions and warm temperatures kept many leaves from turning colors earlier in the fall and contributed to early leaf drop in many areas. Wet snow that fell this week in the Northern region of the State combined with the weight of remaining leaves to cause breakage of tops and limbs on many trees.
Although some color can be found in the Southern region of the State, it is mostly spotty, especially in areas with a high concentration of oak trees. Oaks across the State are staying mostly green, instead of turning to their normal beautiful shades of bronze and red.
A drive south along I-64 towards Beckley will be somewhat colorful, at least through the weekend. U.S. Route 60, also known as the Midland Trail, has some color from White Sulphur Springs to Hawks Nest State Park.
Foliage in Kanawha County ranges from 70% - 75% coloration. Recommended drives include Route 119 from Clendenin to Walton in Roane County, and Route 4 from Clendenin into Clay County.
In the Ohio and Little Kanawha River Valleys leaves are between 80% - 90% peak, but are falling quickly to the ground.
Division of Forestry officials remind residents that once leaves have fallen they become fuel for forest fires. Residents are encouraged to remove leaves from around their homes and other buildings to reduce the risk of damage from forest fires. Outdoor burning is prohibited from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Only vegetative materials such as leaves, brush, and limbs may legally be burned.
